The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Bollywood King Amitabh Bachchan on a petition from the Income Tax department, which claimed Amitabh owes Rs1.66 crore in taxes for his show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) for the year 2002-03.
In July 2012, the Bombay High Court had granted relief to Bachchan by dismissing the appeal filed by the Income Tax Commissioner, who reopened the actor’s assessment proceedings for 2002-03.
In their order, Justices MS Sanlecha and SF Vajifdar upheld an order of the Income Tax Tribunal, which had on March 19, 2010, held that the assessment officer was not justified in starting proceedings under section 147 of I-T Act against Bachchan.
The I-Tax department had appealed in Supreme Court against the High Court order.
The apex court tagged the case to a similar matter already pending with it raising substantial question of law.
Big B has been hosting the show for the fifth time since 2000. The only time it went on air without him at the helm was in the third season when Shah Rukh Khan hosted it.
